Selecting and Mixing the Proper Fuel
This machine is powered by a 2-cycle engine and requires pre-mixing unleaded gasoline and 2-cycle engine oil. Pre-mix the gasoline and engine oil thoroughly in a clean container approved for gasoline.
Use unleaded gasoline intended for automotive use with an octane rating of 87 or higher.
The engine on this model requires the use of John Deere Premium 2-Cycle Engine Oil. The engine was designed to reach its optimal performance output, maximum endurance and minimum preventive maintenance by using this oil.
If John Deere Premium 2-Cycle Oil is not available at your dealership, use any brand of premium 2-cycle engine oil classified as grade ISO-L-EGD or JASO-FC.
Using any other oil will shorten the engine life and increase the required maintenance. The warranty might also be voided by using a lower quality oil.
Mix John Deere Premium 2-Cycle Engine Oil with gasoline according to the instructions on the package.
IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! Do not use automotive oil, 2-cycle outboard oil or any 2-cycle oil other that grade ISO-L-EGD or JASOFC. Do not use pre-mixed gasoline from fuel service stations intended for use in mopeds, motorcycles, etc. |
NOTE: John Deere fuel mix contains a fuel stabilizer and will stay fresh up to 30 days. Do not mix quantities larger than usable in a 30-day period.

Filling Fuel Tank
c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Fuel vapors are explosive and flammable: · Keep fuel away from flames or sparks. · Do not smoke while handling fuel. · Mix and store fuel in a container approved for gasoline. Mix fuel outdoors where there are no sparks or flames. · Fill fuel tank outdoors or in well ventilated area. · Select bare ground, stop engine and allow to cool before adding fuel. · Loosen fuel cap slowly to release pressure and to keep fuel from escaping around the cap. · Tighten fuel cap securely after refueling. · Clean up spilled fuel immediately. · Never attempt to burn off spilled fuel under any circumstances. |
IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! Dirt and water in fuel can cause engine damage: · Clean dirt and debris from the fuel tank opening. · Use clean, fresh, stabilized fuel. · Fill the fuel tank at the end of each day's operation to keep condensation out of the fuel tank. · Use a non-metallic funnel with a plastic mesh strainer when filling the fuel tank or container. |
NOTE: It is normal for smoke to be emitted from a new engine during and after first use.
1. Loosen and remove fuel cap slowly.
NOTE: Do not mix gas and oil in fuel tank.
2. Make sure fuel mixture is adequately mixed in a suitable container before pouring in tank.
3. Carefully pour fuel mixture in tank. Avoid spillage.
4. Clean and inspect fuel cap gasket.
5. Immediately replace fuel cap and hand tighten.
Replacing Fuel Cap
c CAUTION: Avoid injury! A leaking fuel cap is a fire hazard and must be replaced immediately. |
The fuel cap contains a check valve. Clogged air passages will cause poor engine performance. If performance improves when the fuel cap is loosened, check valve may be faulty or air passages are clogged. Replace fuel cap if required.
Filling Chain Oil Tank
Use John Deere bar and chain oil. It is designed for chains and chain oilers and is formulated to perform over a wide temperature range with no dilution required. If not available, use any new SAE-30 weight engine oil.
IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! Check oil level frequently. Never allow the oil tank to run dry. For optimal performance, add oil when the level drops to 13 mm (0.5 in.) from bottom of the tank. |

1. Clean oil tank cap (A) and the area surrounding the cap to prevent debris from entering the reservoir.
2. The pole saw should use approximately one tank of oil for every 1/2 tank of fuel.
Checking Chain Lubrication
IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! If the chain is not lubricating properly, the chain and bar can overheat. Check chain lubrication often. Keep chain oil tank full and keep chain oil passages clean. |
1. Place the cutting attachment on a piece of cardboard or scrap of plywood.
2. Start the pole saw and allow it to run at moderate speed for approximately one minute.
3. Stop the engine.
4. Check that the oil pump is working properly.

5. The cardboard or plywood should have excess oil (A) from the chain rotation if the oil pump is working properly.
6. If proper oil amount is not disbursed, stop engine, let cool completely and clean bar groove and oil passages.
Adjusting Chain Tension
c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Never touch or adjust the chain while the motor is running. The saw chain is very sharp. Always wear protective gloves when performing maintenance to the chain. |
IMPORTANT: Avoid damage! Chain tensioned while warm may be too tight upon cooling. Check the cold tension before next use. |
NOTE: A cold chain is correctly tensioned when there is no slack on the underside of the guide bar, the chain is snug but can be turned by hand without binding.
1. Stop the engine before setting chain tension. Make sure the guide bar nut is loose. Turn chain tensioning screw clockwise to tension chain.

2. Chain must be tensioned whenever the flats (A) on the drive links hang out of the bar groove.

3. During normal pruning operations, chain temperature increases. The tie straps of a correctly tensioned warm chain will hang approximately 1.25 mm (0.05 in.) out of the bar groove (B).

4. The 1.25 mm (0.05 in.) tip (C) of the combination wrench (D) can be used as a guide.
Breaking-In the Chain
NOTE: New chains will stretch and must be tightened frequently.

1. Lift the chain out of the bar groove and lubricate the bar groove (A) with additional oil.
a. Place the cutting attachment on a piece of cardboard or scrap of plywood.
b. Start the pole saw and allow it to run at moderate speed for approximately one minute.
c. Stop the engine.
d. Check that the oil pump is working properly.

2. Adjust the chain tension.

3. Start pole saw and make a few cuts in a log to heat up the chain.
4. Stop the engine and adjust the chain.

Starting the Engine
Starting Engine When Cold (Initial Engine Starting)

1. Lay the pole saw on the ground (A) or support the cutting attachment on a fence (B) or tree branch. Use the cutting attachment hook (C) to keep the unit in place. Ensure that no objects or obstructions are in the immediate area that could come in contact with the bar and chain.

2. Move the switch (D) to the 'I' position.
3. Push primer bulb (E) 8 to 10 times.
4. Move choke lever (F) to the 'CHOKE' position (G).
NOTE: Trigger safety lock (H) must be depressed before squeezing trigger.
5. Squeeze trigger (I) to full throttle position and hold it, or set the switch (D) to the 'START' (fast idle) position (J) and release the trigger.
6. Pull starter until engine tries to run. (No more than 6 pulls.)
7. Move choke lever to half choke position.
8. Pull starter until the engine runs.
9. Run engine 30 to 45 seconds at the 'START' (fast idle) position on half choke position to warm up. Move choke lever to the 'RUN' position (K).
Starting Engine When Warm (Restarting Engine)
1. Place choke lever in the 'RUN' position (K), if it is not already there.
NOTE: It is not necessary to squeeze trigger or set the part throttle lock when engine is warm.
2. Pull starter rope until the engine runs.
NOTE: If engine fails to start, push primer until fuel appears in clear plastic return line.
Stopping the Engine
1. Release trigger.

Preparation for Cutting
1. Wear non-slip gloves for maximum grip and protection.
2. Maintain a proper grip on the unit whenever the engine is running. Use your right hand to firmly grip the throttle control handle while your left hand has a firm grip on the foam padding around the driveshaft housing.
3. Hold the unit firmly with both hands.
Operating the Pole Saw
c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Muffler surfaces are very hot during and after operation of this unit. Keep all body parts away from the muffler. Serious burns can occur if contact is made with the muffler. |
1. Run the engine at full throttle just before entering the cut by squeezing the throttle trigger.

2. Hold the front cutting guide against the branch being cut, as shown (A). This will steady the branch. Begin the cut. Do not use a back and forth sawing type motion.
3. Keep the engine at full throttle the entire time you are cutting.
4. Allow the chain to cut for you. Exert only light downward pressure. If you force the cut, damage to the bar, chain or engine can result.
5. Release the throttle trigger as soon as the cut is completed, allowing the engine to idle. If you run the saw at full throttle without a cutting load, unnecessary wear or damage can occur to the chain, bar and engine.
Limbing and Pruning
c CAUTION: Avoid injury! This unit is not designed to prevent electrocution. Do not operate within 15 m (50 ft) of overhead electrical lines. Never climb into a tree to prune or limb. Do not stand on ladders, platforms, a log or any position which can cause you to lose your balance or control of the unit. |
This unit is designed for trimming small branches and limbs up to 20 cm (8 in.) in diameter.
· Plan the cut carefully. Be aware of the direction in which the branch will fall.
· Branches may fall in unexpected directions. Do not stand directly under the branch being cut.

· The most typical cutting application is to position the unit at an angle of 60° (A) or less, depending on the specific situation.

· The long reach (B) of the machine allows the operator to prune branches or limbs that are normally out of reach, such as branches hanging over a lake or river.
· Long branches should be removed in several stages.
· Cutting lower branches first will allow the top branches more room to fall.
· Work slowly, keeping both hands on the pole saw with a firm grip. Maintain secure footing and balance.
· Keep the tree between you and the chain while limbing. Cut from the side of the tree opposite the branch you are cutting.
· Do not use for felling or bucking.
· Do not cut from a ladder. Leave this operation for professionals
NOTE: It is important to remove the limb away from the trunk to reduce the weight so that the bark does not strip off the main member. After removing the branch, a final cut is made flush with the main member.
· When pruning or limbing a branch that is larger than 10 cm (4 in.) in diameter:

a. Underbuck the branch 1/3 through for the first cut (C).
b. Overbuck the branch for the second cut (D), dropping the branch off.
c. Make a smooth, flush cut along the tree trunk for the final cut (E). The bark will grow back and seal the wound.
